Scott Edmund, 26 of Tegid Road, admitted six offences dating back to between 2000 and 2004, when he was aged between 13 and 15.
He admitted counts of indecent assault and indecency with a child.
His victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was around four years younger than him.
Swansea Crown Court heard the pair would play together and Edmund suggested the pair went to a nearby den where he then suggested they play a game of dares, which involved them being engaged in mutual sex acts.
"You told him he shouldn't tell anyone else about it," said Judge Keith Thomas.
But he added that no threats had been made to the victim.
Edmund had been due to stand trial but pleaded guilty on the day of trial.
Judge Thomas said it would be "unrealistic" to sentence him by adult guidelines as the offences were committed when he was a youth.
"The reason for having separate guidelines for young offenders is because the court understands that young people don't have the same appreciation for sexual matters that adults do," said Judge Thomas.
Experimentation
The judge said he accepted the acts were sexual experimentation before Edmund was "fully aware of the serious aspects of such behaviour".
"I am assured you are no longer a serious risk to anybody," said the judge.
He imposed a two-year community order including two years' supervision.
Edmund was also ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and will have to sign as a sex offender for the next five years.
